Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney : Case 1 for Game Boy

The Phoenix Wright series is one that spans over a dozen games. From the GBA to the DS, all the way to modern HD versions for PC and modern consoles.

And to think it all began potential life as a Game Boy Color game.

So what if it was designed earlier than that... for the original Game Boy instead?

This demake is the entire first case of the original game "The First Turnabout".
It was created as a technical demonstration of the capabilities of GB Studio and how next to zero knowledge of coding can take you.

Best played on an actual Game Boy (a pocket would be best!)

Second best way to play is in an emulator like BGBSameboy or Mesen.
Just download the rom and drop into the emulator.

(Also best played with frame blending turned on!)

A truly incredible demake for the monochrome Gameboy, taking the advantages of high resolutions without many colors!

I did played the GBA versions of PW:AA and T&T with the fan translations so this is indeed up my alley!

Do you think it's possible to add the other cases? (except Rise from the Ashes because it's kinda of a slog and i really didn't like it).

(+2)

Glad you enjoyed!

It'd be possible for sure but I reckon you'd maybe only fit 1 maybe 2 cases on a rom before you ran out of space.

I chose Case 1 since it's a very compact/introduction to the games, it's very short and doesn't have a lot of characters/scenes, like it not having any of the investigation scenes makes it a lot smaller.

80% of the GB Studio project file is included in the Roms+Bonuses.zip, (I removed cross examination 2 but the fundamentals are all there) so if someone wanted to take what I've done and make Case 2 they have the resources.

But for me I'm happy with just this, Capcom is pretty chill with fanworks but I don't want to push my luck, and of course there's a million others games I have to demake/make mockups of :D.

Glad to hear it was fun for you to make!

And whether if there will be another case, only time (and maybe also a GB rom cartridge space and how much it'll allow) will tell.

Either way, I'll be looking forward for the future demakes you plan to do!

That was a wonderful and beautiful experience (as someone's always loved the series but never played the games)

Aw yay! So glad it drew you in to give it a try. I really do recommend playing the games if you have the ability to, they're like getting wrapped up with a good book!

I replay them every few years with that mentality, where even if I know most of the story beats and solutions, it's just nice to be back with the characters :D.

Had a blast playing this on a GameBoy! Surprised how well it played on such a small screen. Loved every single bit about it!

(+1)

Aw yay! I love it when people have the chance to play it on actual hardware.
So glad you enjoyed it and it wasn't an eye strain!

Thank you~

You're welcome! :D

Glad you enjoyed!

for some reason z and x are reversed, z is b and x is a

In the web build? No idea how that happened, I thought it would be the same as when I ran it in GB Studio, I'll edit the controls, thanks for the heads up!

I really enjoyed this, and I don’t know the source material. In itself, the art is just inspiring for all us GB Studio creators.

Oh wow, this makes me realize I really have to try harder. This is awesome, way better than what I did and what I would've done, it's perfect.

Don't give up! Comparison is the thief of joy.

I compared myself to a lot of other projects when I started doing them but after a while I try to remember that it's something that will teach me more things I can use in the future.

And ultimately, your work will always have something different and unique that you bring to the table!

(+1)

That is so true. Thank you!

(+2)

That is too amazing! Do you intend on doing the entirety of PW1 eventually?

(+3)

I do not sadly! I tend to try to hedge my bets with demake stuff, this being the first proper playable one, I think just the first case wouldn't get Capcoms attention too much. (Though Capcom is generally pretty cool with fanworks)

But it's always left open for anyone else to do the rest! Or hopefully take the studio project and adapt it for their own original work :D.

(+2)

Excellent! :D Thanks very very much!

YOOOOOO!

Only thing good from Capcom and you nailed it. Thanks.

Really impressive demake!!

Love what you did here. I've always been a fan of PW, and know the first installment by heart. You stayed so very close to the source material. Music and sound effects are spot on too.  Hurray!

Thanks! It was a fun challenge sticking close to the original.

A few minor changes was trying to minimise scene changes, so I shuffled/grouped some parts together but wanted to maintain the flow as best I could.

Glad you enjoyed it! :D

Disclaimer: I rarely leave comments, and I'm not evensure if I ever have on itch, but wow! Just played through the whole thing on my Retroid Pocket Classic, and  everything was fantastic. You were able to capture the essence of the original game and put it in an 8-bit monochrome format beautifully. If you ever make a similar original game for the GB or GBC, I'd definitely buy it!

Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it =], it was a lot of fun to do the original justice.

Hope to make something original in the future indeed!

(+3)

This is AMAZING! Huge shoutout to everyone involved - and a big thank you for releasing the project files so the community can learn from it!

(+1)

Thank you! Really hope the project files can be useful to others, if I can help just one person learn something new it's worth it :D.

(+5)

this is an incredible demake, from the art to the music to the everything!!

(+1)

Thank ye kindly! Tried to do the original as much justice as I could. Couldn't have done it without the help of the GB Studio community!

(+1)

this is amazing

Thank ye, I owe a lot to my patrons and the GB Studio community who made this possible :D.
