GB Pixel Art Jam 2023 Submission
A downloadable asset pack
My entry for GB Pixel Art Jam 2023!
Theme: An Awesome Discovery
Well it was quite the head scratcher of a theme to start off with, I can't deny that the very notion of an awesome discovery conjures up the grand, the mythical, the legendary! And in a way that's what I ended on, on a personal level.
The year? The mid 2000's. The website? Youtube. The discovery? AMVs.
Anime Music Videos or Animated Music Videos, a medium where one could time and sync anime clips to a piece of music to tell a story/heighten the scenes. A marvelous thing to discover and continue to enjoy to this day!
And if you were interested in the AMV I chose, it can be found here and is still up 16 years later! How time flies.
If you're reading this and checked my entry out, cheers!

Amazing, never thought I'd see love for GB Cardcaptor Sakura!!
Thanks! I only realised after the fact this was a double whammy of a love letter to the GBC Cardcaptor Sakura games which have such wonderful pixel work. :D.
Yeah :D They certainly do, I often look at their pixel artworks for inspiration. They're gorgeous
So cool! I'm going to press play. Where are my headphones?
I did think about getting a cover of "There she goes" to accompany it after the jam! :D
Love the usage of the boarder to emphasize its a video. Super cute and clean design
this is so cute! It made me feel like a teen again discovering all kinds of anime on my old laptop!
Thank you! And I've had a similar experience! I still have an older laptop running vista and one thing I made sure to save from it were two AMVs :D.
I don't know much about composition or techniques, but my eyes say they like it =D
I think it would take me a loooong time to draw hands as good as you
Glad to get a thumbs up from your eyes! (that's a sentence!)
Well it did help that most of the posing was done for me, but if you keep at it you'll get better. Hands can be daunting but if you keep drawing them, you'll get the muscle memory built in.
Great composition. Very dynamic.
Thank you!
Fantastic interpretation! Reminds me of when I discovered AMVs, which ended up helping me discover a ton of new music and anime. Really great art!
Thank you! I went through a similar experience too, so many new anime and new songs discovered thanks to AMVs :D.
It's nostalgic to see that old-style YT playbar :,)
This is a cool choice for subject since that era of the UI lends itself so well to recreating in GB (as opposed to the current day YT) with its 4:3 ratio and big visual elements that it itself needed due to SD monitors of the time.
I like seeing personal discoveries with this jam theme. And it being the mid 2000's adds more flavor to it. I've always thought it was interesting the idea of playing a console past it heyday by a few years and, while this may not have been intended, displaying a 2000's subject matter on a console from (mostly) the 90's feels very much in the spirit of discovery to me. I can imagine it being the mid 2000's, browsing YT and playing GB, perhaps still finding out about new games from online or getting the most out of the games one has had for years.
Nice entry :) And congratulations on your very first jam submission!!
Haha yes, I thought the same about the old Youtube UI, thank the stars for 4:3 being the GB ratio as well. (Makes me think the GBA and modern Youtube are more 16:9 hmmmm? :D)
And thank you! It was a lot of fun, looking forward to next years. It's an absolute solid jam concept due to not being able to rely on sprites/it's pure BG so your tile work as to be on point. It's also great due to it's very feasible in the time limit too. I'll bang on that old drum, limitation breeds creativity ;D.
Nice, personal interpretation. The composition is great. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Was a tricky process getting it to 192 since can't use sprites for anything, but was a real good challenge that meant I couldn't lean on that as an easy out :D.
You achieved a dynamic hand gesture there too.
